The Big Stride Out

Back in October last year, our friends David Bracey and Desmond High walked along the Grand Union Canal from Birmingham to London (that’s a whopping 150 miles!) in just five days, raising money for a number of charities, including us. Thanks to your generous donations, in total they raised £22,000 of which we recently received our share of over £4000!

We’ll be investing our share of the donation in new IT and playground equipment, and specialist training for our staff.

Four years ago, David started treatment for testicular cancer, a deadly form of the disease if not treated quickly. Fast approaching his 50th birthday, David decided it was time to fulfil a pledge he made to himself during his recovery to give something back, to raise awareness of the disease and to do his bit to help find a cure. David and Desmond devised the Big Stride Out together, choosing to support Orchid, the UK’s leading charity working on behalf of anyone affected or interested in male cancer

Alongside Orchid and Quest, the pair chose these other charities:

  • The Primary Club – a cricketer’s charity that raises money to provide sports and recreational facilities for the visually impaired.
  • Lupus (UK) – which supports research into this currently incurable illness of the immune system, which can mimic other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and ME.
  • Fields of Life – a small international development charity based in Kent, whose main focus is clean water, education and healthcare in post-conflict East Africa.
